Here’s How to Change your Perception

Change your thinking,
change your life!

Positive mind, positive vibes, positive life.As some of you may know, I am currently reading “Awaken the Giant Within” by Tony Robbins. There’s a chapter in this book called, The Vocabulary of Ultimate Success. This chapter discusses how the words we use affect what we experience. Tony’s theory is if we change our habitual vocabulary, the words we consistently use to describe the emotions of our life, we can instantaneously change how we think, how we feel and how we live our lives.

There’s an exercise in this chapter that asks you to identify 3 words that you currently use on a regular basis to create negative feelings in your life. Then he asks you to come up with 3 new, crazy and outrageous replacement words to break your pattern and / or to limit your emotional intensity. With the ultimate goal of creating a new pattern in your neurlogy – a new neural highway away from pain and closer to pleasure.

I partook in this exercise and one of my three words that I came up with was ‘frustrated.’ I found myself often stating “I feel frustrated” and realized that when I used that word, I would enter into a negative state. I would feel stuck, as if someone or something was standing in my way. I would become tense and would find myself slouching and breathing more shallow. I replaced that phrase and word with, “my ass is chapped right now” which has since turned into “I feel chapped right now.” What has this simple change done for me? Honestly, it makes me laugh and immediately redirects my frustrated feelings. When I say “chapped ass”, I literally think of a chapped ass – how can’t you laugh at that? Once I find myself smiling or laughing, it allows me to remain open with a forward motion.

I have since changed other words and phrases that I typically use that create both negative and positive feelings in my life. If I can say, “I feel fine,” which is a somewhat neutral phrase, how would I feel if I say, “I feel exceptional”? Wow, now that’s pretty amazing and a great way to feel. It’s a simple shift that takes awareness, effort and dedication. However, it is making a difference. And please, if you hear me say, “I feel frustrated,” I give you permission to say back to me, “do you feel frustrated or chapped?”

Change your thinking and you can change your life!
